Can horses mate with zebras or any other animals ?
Yes, horses can mate and produce offspring with all other members of the family Equidae. A cross between a horse and a zebra is called a zorse. Like most hybrids, these crosses are usually sterile due to the parent species having different numbers of chromosomes (this means that the hybrid cannot produce functional sex cells).
Humans can certainly mate with other animals - this is called zoophilia or bestiality. Dogs and horses seem to be the most popular choices, but various other species have been known. In order for two different species to be able to breed, they must be closely related - usually within the same genus, and at least within the same family. This means that they share much of the same genetic material. It’s not possible to mate a human with a dog, for example, and produce little human-dog hybrids, because these animals don't share enough genetic material for the sperm and egg to 'recognize' each other. A dog sperm simply wouldn't fertilise a human egg, and vice versa.
However, we humans are in the same family as the great apes, and genetically speaking should be in the same genus as chimps and bonobos - placing ourselves in a separate genus to all other animals is more to do with human arrogance than genetics. Chimps and bonobos are our closest living relatives, sharing around 98% of our DNA - this is more than lions and tigers share, and they are placed in the same genus and are able to interbreed. It is therefore highly likely that we could interbreed with chimps and bonobos.
It is rumoured that a certain scientist once impregnated a chimp with his own sperm, but got cold feet and destroyed the animal before the baby was born. A human-ape hybrid is never likely to happen for moral and ethical reasons, and a good thing, too - imagine a creature with the strength and aggression of a chimp and the intelligence and capacity for evil of a human. It'd be lethal.
great article! really surprising info.
